Hello Fellow Chamber Members,
I am writing you in the capacity as your new State Representative. I wanted to give you my analysis of the Governor’s January 28th State of the State address particularly as it impacts business.
The speech was about 90 minutes long and ranged from education reform to the Federal infusion of a $3.4 billion stimulus package. First of all, I am very please that the Governor does not plan on raising taxes and will continue to keep costs competitive for higher education. Many increases in fees, however, for services have been recommended. I agree with the Governor that Medicaid is a primary concern as it accounts for 35% of the state-operating budget and we are seeing an increase in demand for services as unemployment rates have grown.
As we all can agree, the most important issue facing Ohio is job creation. This means lowering taxes on families and businesses and to renew our focus on entrepreneurialism, creativity, and innovation in order to achieve a real 'economic stimulus' to our state. More jobs in Ohio will broaden the tax base and allow for services our residents depend on. Ohio needs to build a reputation of being business-friendly environment.
I will keep you updated as the proposed budget, presented on February 2nd, evolves. A final vote to approve the 2-year budget is scheduled for June 30th.
I am please to announce that I have been appointed as the Ranking Member on the Economic Development Committee and I also serve on the Local Government/Government Administration, Education and Housing and Urban Development committees.
